The second annual Absa Healthcare Initiative Awards took place alongside the 2007 Pan African Health Congress in September and the Africa Centre was shortlisted for an award in the NGO/Non profit organisation category. 24 of the 37 entries received fell under this category.
The introduction of the awards in 2006 was received very positively by the healthcare industry and proved to be a definite success. The awards aim to recognise companies/organisations with efficient health initiatives with proven results in place. The nominations in each category were judged on three criteria, namely innovation, impact and sustainability. The judging for the awards was carried out by a professional panel of seven judges drawn from the NGO, private and academic sectors. Because of the exceptionally high quality of entries, the judging proved to be a challenging task. The winners were announced at the gala dinner on 19 September at the Sandton Sun. Although the Afirca Centre did not walk away with the laurels, Professor Jan du Toit, director of the centre is positive about the recognition: “It is a great honour for the Africa Centre and by being a finalist the centre received a lot of exposure.” |
